Sebastiaan De Cocq
Sebastiaan De Cocq is a PhD candidate at the research unit Sport & Society of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). He obtained his master’s degree Research in Public Administration and Organizational Science in 2017. This unique program of the Utrecht School of Governance at the Utrecht University is offered in collaboration with five other Dutch universities. It specifically prepares students for an academic career. His personal and professional interests regarding sport and society are comprehensive. Topics as social mobility through sports, spectator safety and sports violence have not been left untouched in his studies and research projects. In his doctoral research, Sebastiaan addresses the social impact of elite sport on sport for all. Public investments in elite sport are often justified along its self-evident positive societal outcomes, but empirical support for these policy claims remains ambivalent and marginal. More specifically, Sebastiaan addresses how the underlying mechanisms of this presumed relationship empirically take shape and if public funding can therefore be legitimized.
